What to Expect 

The Nestlé USA & Mayer Brown LLP 1L Scholars Legal Internship Program is a paid, full time, 8-10 week summer internship offered in partnership with the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity.  This comprehensive program provides law students completing their first year of studies with the unique opportunity to intern for half of the program at Mayer Brown’s Washington D.C. offices and half of the program with the in-house legal team at Nestlé USA’s Arlington, Virginia headquarters. 

 

The 2023 1L Legal Scholar will work at Mayer Brown’s Washington D.C. offices doing work for Nestlé and other Mayer Brown clients.  In addition, the 1L Legal Scholar will be offered the opportunity to participate in Mayer Brown’s summer associate training program and events throughout the entire internship period.  During the time at Mayer Brown, participants will have the opportunity to work directly with associates and partners will experience where they will gain experience and in-sights from working at one of America’s premier full-service law firms. 

 

While with Nestlé USA at the company’s beautiful headquarter building in Arlington, Virginia, the 1L Legal Scholar will receive hands-on experience working with the Nestlé Legal team in areas such as intellectual property, litigation, commercial contracts, employment, advertising, food law and general legal matters.  In–house lawyers will provide mentoring to participants with developmental feedback to gain a better understanding of the unique role of an in-house law department at the world’s largest food company.   

 

 Examples of Past Projects  

As a legal intern at Nestlé USA, you will gain exposure to senior legal leadership and develop your professional network. 

  • Reviewing and drafting commercial contracts 

  • Assisting with the development of policies, training materials, checklists and guidelines in a variety of practice areas including employment and environmental law 

  • Preparing cease and desist letters for commercial and intellectual property disputes 

  • Investigating and managing potential trademark infringement matters 

  • Research current trends in food law 

  • Digital and Social Media Matters

• This internship is limited to individuals completing their first year of law school. 

 

Preferred Qualifications 

• 3.0 or above cumulative GPA 
 

Additional Requirements 

• Willing to work for 8-10 consecutive weeks in summer of 2023 

• Willing to work in Arlington, Virginia and Washington, DC for the duration of the internship 

 

Knowledge & Skills 

• Strong communication, analytical, organizational and interpersonal skills 

• Self-starter who is results-oriented and exhibits responsibility, creativity, and intellectual curiosity 

• Involvement in extracurricular activities, demonstrating initiative and leadership
