Position Summary: 
Provide appropriate sensory and consumer knowledge and understanding to ensure innovation and renovation meets consumer expectations on the product experience, working in close collaboration with cross functional teams, Markets (domestic and global), Technical Application Groups, R&D and S&T. Apply knowledge of food systems, the human senses, and statistical models to lead research for innovation, renovation, and advanced research initiatives, as well as participate in the development and implementation of consumer and sensory capabilities.  Provide category product insights to inspire and influence the innovation pipeline and business strategies. Continuously seek to develop and promote effective and efficient ways of working
 
Key Responsibilities:
 

Provide sensory and consumer insights to innovation and renovation projects:
• Serve as a trusted advisor and recognized consumer and sensory expert to lead complex, strategic projects in a global context that have broad-based implications across R&D, the business and across categories.
• Partner pro-actively with Project Managers and help define the research questions and potential outcomes (key success criteria) from a consumer and sensory insight perspective to add value and influence project success.  
• Participate in cross functional project teams including foundational learning, front-end innovation until launch providing guidance on choice and use of sensory evaluation and consumer methodologies. For front-end innovation support idea generation, concept building and refinement with consumer input and insights. 
• Ensure CSI knowledge is transferred to the industrial trial stage, guiding the identification of key sensory attributes, and the set-up of consumer-centric specifications including acceptable limits.  

 

Manage and execute consumer and sensory studies with excellence:

• Define clear and time-bound plans and prioritize available resources.
• Manage studies by planning, designing, conducting appropriate analysis, reporting and presentation of results in line with best practices, client expectations, and with impact to the cross-functional team and business partners.
• Ensure collaboration with project team, technicians, panel leaders, and external agencies in order to ensure lean, transparent, and flawless execution. 
• Support the management and upkeep of internal and external panels.  
Provide sensory & consumer understanding as it relates to the product experience and translate into actionable insights:
• Conduct category preference mapping to identify competitive insights to optimize the product to enhance the consumer experience, identify white space opportunities that can drive future growth and guide strategy. 
• Support product and process improvement opportunities by better understanding the effect of the recipe and process parameters has on sensory attributes and consumer acceptance.  

Ensure CSI supports continuous improvement and team development:
• Support the continuous improvement of consumer and sensory practices, going beyond traditional research and applying innovative and agile methods.  
• Support data cleaning and panel maintenance by leading training of panel members. 
• Clearly translates results and insights into visual presentations which inspire action.
• Ensure collaboration and communication across all support functions by coaching junior team members (panel members, panel leader, technicians, interns, and associate scientists) to reach excellence in execution and autonomy ensuring high quality results are achieved.  
• Be the communication lead that promotes consumer understanding and maximizes collaboration between sensory, consumer, R&D, and global business/partners.
• Build and share knowledge by contributing to internal trainings and to knowledge sharing in the CSI Knowledge Network across R&D Nestle.

 

Experience and Education Requirements:   

• Bachelor’s (Master or higher degree preferred) in Sensory Science, Consumer Science, Psychology, Marketing Research, Food Technology, Food Science, Statistics, or other related fields. 
• Experience in a wide range of sensory analysis and consumer (qualitative, quantitative) testing techniques and their applications. (PHD - right out of school, Advanced Degree 2+ years, Bachelor’s Degree 5+ Years)
• Completion of certificate programs (i.e., UC Davis Sensory Certification, University of Georgia Market Research Certification).
• Strong analytical, statistics, and problem-solving skills is a must.  
• Experience in fast moving consumer packaged goods, from R&D and/or business side is a plus.  
• Experience and understanding working with food, confections, beverages, supplements and/or health and wellness category space.
