Innovation Sensory Insights is an essential function within Nestle Health Science’s R&D organization that supports both innovation and renovation projects through product experience research.  The team is looking for a Senior Technician to manage our internal sensory kitchen and support sensory scientists in both internal and external sensory & consumer testing. 

 

In this role, the individual will supervise the day-to-day operations of the sensory kitchen, under the guidance of the team leader.    This includes collaborating with sensory scientists, ensuring projects operate smoothly and efficiently, and supervising the work of the ISI Sensory Technician.

 

Core Responsibilities:     

Responsible for day-to-day operation of the sensory laboratory:

  • Working with the lead scientist and manager, ensure that sensory studies are executed on time and with excellence
  • Responsible for the day-to-day operation of the sensory laboratory
  • Maintains laboratory and supply space cleanliness and demonstrates safe laboratory behavior; attends training as needed and coordinates efforts with facilities. 
  • Provides day to day direction to the ISI Sensory Technician and sensory panelists to support laboratory and panel operations.
  • Plans and procures products and supplies for the laboratory each week to enable on site tastings and product evaluations (e.g. foods, beverages, cups, napkins, etc.).
  • Coordinates shipments and deliveries with outside vendors and pilot plant – including documentation, distribution and storage once received.
  • Programs sensory software and performs data clean-up for descriptive analysis and discrimination panel evaluations.
  • Maintains records of monthly attendance and performance for descriptive panel.
  • Understand and follow environmental, health and safety policies and procedures as pertains to role.
  • Trains technicians and/or others in a support role (who may share laboratory spaces where testing/tastings are conducted) on good laboratory practices and all sample preparation and storage requirements.

 

Supports execution of on-site and external sensory and consumer testing:

  • Schedule, plan and execute informal lab tastings including product preparation, ballot development and reporting.
  • Leads execution and analysis of testing for the discrimination panel.
  • Procures, codes and ships products for external consumer testing, ensuring timely delivery and record keeping.
  • Leads activities related to Employee Feedback Community such as programming, participant interface, database management, packing and shipping, data acquisition.
  • Supports execution of onsite consumer testing. Coordinates with facilities for consumer testing to ensure the facility is ready for consumer research (e.g. room set up, staffing for product prep, alert security).

  • Independently motivated.
  • Good interpersonal/teamwork skills and a sense of business/technical interrelationships
  • Ability to self-manage, juggle multiple priorities, and pay attention to details

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • 2+ years’ experience working in a sensory department in the consumer goods industry with a working knowledge of sensory research methods.
  • Strong knowledge of and experience working within a scientific laboratory, maintaining equipment adhering to relevant safety and procedural guidelines and SOPs. 
  • Software knowledge: Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook, SAP and sensory testing software, ideally EyeQuestion.
  • Moderate statistical skills. Comfortable in the use of data acquisition and statistical software.

 

Hours & Location

  • 40 hours per week
  • Minimum 4 days in the office per week, Bridgewater, NJ

This position will be either a remote or hybrid role based on the selected candidate’s geographic location. Preference will be given to applicants who live within a commutable distance of Bridgewater, NJ, Chicago, IL, Palm Beach Gardens, FL or Long Island, NY. 

 

The approximate pay range for this position is $66,000 to $82,000. Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Final compensation may vary based on factors including but not limited to knowledge, skills and abilities as well as geographic location.
