The Electrician is responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical equipment to ensure it remains in optimal working condition. The role supports the safe and efficient operation of plant machinery by setting, adjusting, and maintaining electrical systems and devices within specified tolerances. All work performed on the premises must comply with SANS 10142-1 standards (Wiring of Premises) and all internal engineering, quality, safety, health, and environmental (SHE) standards, where these exceed regulatory requirements. The Electrician is responsible for fault-finding, troubleshooting, and responding to equipment breakdowns to minimize downtime and ensure operational continuity. The role also requires the completion of all relevant administrative and compliance-related activities in support of Asset Maintenance Management (AMM), Safety, Health and Environment (SHE), and Contractor Development Management (CDM) requirements. In addition, the Electrician will actively participate in new project installations, continuous improvement initiatives, Contractor Development Management (CDM) activities, and Manufacturing Downtime Waste reduction (MDWT) programs to enhance plant performance, reliability, and safety.

 

A day in the life an Electrician:

  • Carry out the planned maintenance required on plant.
  • Incumbent must be proactive and prevent breakdowns on his/her patrols and shows initiative to continuously improve equipment performance.
  • Install, service, repair and maintain existing and new equipment.
  • Follow up and recommend actions to overcome and improve problems encountered.
  • Attend to electrical faults and breakdowns in the factory.
  • Faultfinding on PLCs.
  • Programming and faultfinding on VSD’’s.
  • Programming and faultfinding on defined instrumentation and calibration.
  • Faultfinding on electrical machines on running processes
  • Analyzing and investigating re-current faults.
  • Improve functional ease of maintenance, cleaning, reliability of equipment
  • Analyzing and investigating re-current faults.
  • Repairs must be carried out quickly (first time right) and efficiently.
  • Maintain high standard of work.
  • Ensure machine availability for production targets to be met.
  • Undertakes to work shift, standby and overtime as per company requirements.
  • Electrical panels must be closed and always locked and kept in a neat and clean condition complete with a set of as-built wiring diagrams.
  • Lockout & permit procedure is to be always used when any person could be exposed to danger by the inadvertent start of machinery.
  • Ensure any dangerous conditions be made safe immediately.
  • Ensure that all work is performed and plant performs to always protect product safety.
  • To correct errors on drawings and update drawings.
  • Complete the necessary administrative tasks for AMM, SHE, CDM and MDWT.
  • Interact with production people.
  • Interact with suppliers.
  • Interact with contractors.

 

What will make you successful?

  1. At least +N3 Certificate.
  2. Served Apprenticeship and qualified with a Trade Test Certificate.
  3. A minimum of two years’ experience in electrical field.
  4. Certificate of Registration as an Installation Electrician
  5. Good interpersonal skills.
  6. Ability to work independently and under pressure.
  7. Computer literate (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  8. Strong analytical & problem-solving skills.
  9. Working knowledge of PLC’s
  10. In depth knowledge of maintenance practices.
