Job Summary

Works under the general direction and guidance of the QA Supervisor.  The Micro/Chem Lab technician is responsible for specific activities, as described below, relative to the laboratories.

 

Key Areas of Responsibility

Safety:

  • Understand the safety risks associated with the job.
  • Comply with all safety rules, procedures, and work practices.
  • Report all safety incidents.
  • Has read and understands the Safety, Health and Environmental Policy.

Environmental:

  • Understand the aspects of the job that impact the environment.
  • Comply with all environmental rules, procedures, and work practices.
  • Report all environmental incidents.
  • Has read and understands the Safety, Health and Environmental Policy.

Quality:

  • Follow recipes and deviations at all times. Unauthorized deviations are strictly forbidden.
  • Comply with all FDA rules, procedures, and work practices.
  • Follow all Nestle and GMP procedures.
  • Maintain confidential information on recipes.
  • Report all deviations from the recipe.

Operations:

  • Responsible for accurately and efficiently preparing all media to be used in the micro lab.
  • Maintain inventories of all in-house prepared media used for microbiological analyses.
  • Maintain an accurate inventory of media bases and other lab supplies and notify the Supervisor of shortages in time to reorder.
  • Responsible for picking up finished product samples from the hi-rise, returning samples to the hi-rise after testing, and maintaining adequate room in the Micro Lab freezer.
  • Responsible for the routine cleaning (as directed by company Standard Operating Procedures) of lab equipment. This includes but is not limited to pathogen lab floors, cabinets, freezers, refrigerators, and incubators and other areas as directed.
  • Responsible for all daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual equipment checks as directed in compliance with Company Standard Operating Procedures. This will include incubators, pH meters, distilled water system, freezers, refrigerators, autoclaves, balances, and other equipment as directed.
  • Autoclave any items requiring sterility and maintain autoclaves and autoclave records on a daily basis.
  • On an as-needed basis (fill-in for Microbiologist or Specialist), responsible for the accurate and efficient microbiological analysis of raw ingredients and finished products including the completion of all data records related to analysis in compliance with the Raw Goods Sample Plan and the Finished Goods Sample Plan.
  • On an as-needed basis, assist the Microbiologist and Micro Lab Specialist in the completion of their duties including data entry, finished goods sampling, raw material sampling, and filing.
  • Responsible for accurately and efficiently performing chemical testing on incoming goods as per established procedure.
  • Responsible for obtaining and performing quality tests on milk storage tanks, STOVEX storage tanks, and blend vats for fat acidity, solids, odor, taste, etc. as required.
  • Chemistry lab p-test scheduling and results management.
  • Inputting data and results into SAP.
  • Work in a safe manner and maintain a clean and orderly work environment.
  • Responsible for performing other duties, as assigned.

 

REQUIREMENTS AND MINIMUM EDUCATION LEVEL:

  • B.S. Degree in Food Science, Microbiology, Chemistry preferred, or other related field preferred or equivalent experience

 

EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:

  • Preferably 1-3 years manufacturing QA/QC and/or laboratory experience in food industry.
  • Knowledge of continuous improvement.
  • Must have good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Must be able to handle multiple assignments.
  • Must be precise and accurate, well-organized worker.
  • Must be able to perform in a demanding, fast-paced environment.
  • Good mathematical (basic statistical skills highly desirable), problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency with computer systems, personal computers, spreadsheet software (Microsoft Office, etc.) and mainframe system with custom applications preferred.
