We at Nestlé Research & Development in Konolfingen near Bern / Switzerland develop for Nestlé worldwide new products, processes, and packaging concepts in the areas of Dairy and Nutrition. In addition, we also provide technical assistance to our factories.

 

As a Nutrition Biotechnology Intern, you will have the exciting opportunity to learn and contribute to the optimization of fermentation and downstream processes for probiotic bacteria. This opportunitiy is designed to provide you with hands-on experience in research, experimentation, and analysis within the field of probiotic manufacturing.

 

A Day in the Life of a Food Biotechnology Intern

 

Your work will consist of approx. 70-80% hands-on laboratory work. Key tasks are:

 

Assisting in the Optimization of Fermentation Processes:

  • Support the planning and execution of fermentations with probiotic bacteria at the laboratory scale under the guidance of senior team members
  • Participate in exploring novel technologies related to probiotic bioprocessing
  • Assist in documenting and analyzing results, contributing to internal presentations
  • Contribute to key projects of the Science & Technology Department

 

Optimizing subsequent downstream process to limit losses in the process and throughout the product shelf-life: 

  • Help assess various drying strategies and parameters as part of ongoing experiments.
  • Participate in planning and conducting trials for drying probiotics at the laboratory level.
  • Assist in the analysis of dried bacteria using basic microbiological methods.

 

What will make you successful

 

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Food Sciences or related sciences 
  • Strong interest in fermentation technology; first academic or work experience in microbiology is an asset
  • Cooperating well in a team, autonomous, structured, and proactive
  • Good command of MS Office tools, more specifically proficient in Excel
  • Experience with programming languages like R or Python to perform data analysis and visualization is a strong asset
  • Good written and oral English communication skills, basic German is an asset
