POSITION SUMMARY:
The role of the Capital Project Cost Estimator is to prepare cost estimates for assigned capital projects to aid management decision making in bidding on or determining the price of a particular capital project scope. This role requires ability to provide cost estimates specialized according to the particular service performed or type of product manufactured and supports the capital project team by providing cost estimates of equipment, services, and construction.

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The role of the Capital Project Cost Estimator focuses on their assigned capital projects as their main responsibility. Below is a list of responsibilities and accountabilities by area.  
  • Consult with capital project teams, clients, vendors, procurement, personnel in other departments, or construction foremen to discuss and formulate estimates and resolve issues  
  • Prepare estimates for the project management team for purposes such as planning, organizing, and scheduling work per company standards  
  • Establish cost estimate and performance measurement requirements for contractors, subcontractors, and vendors  
  • Prepare and analyze project cost estimates  
  • Articulate the level of risk or uncertainty remaining in the prepared estimates  
  • Coordinate project compliance with the change management process to trend and forecast project cost relative to the baseline budgets, accounting for inflation risks 
  • Review, analyze and challenge where needed the cost estimates and labor-hour budgets produced by contractors, subcontractors, and vendors  
  • Communicate closely with project engineers/managers, contracting and procurement to prepare estimates for use in selecting vendors or subcontractors  
  • Confer with engineers, architects, owners, contractors, and subcontractors on changes and adjustments to cost estimates  
  • Prepare feasibility cost estimates with limited information for management analysis of project financials 
  • Maintain knowledge and data base of current equipment unit pricing and construction unit prices by architectural discipline to support future cost estimates and benchmarking 

 

REQUIREMENTS AND MINIMUM EDUCATION LEVEL: 

  • Bachelor Degree in engineering, construction management or other technical/finance field 

 

EXPERIENCE: 

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in industrial capital project cost estimation, preferably within the manufacturing industry 

 

SKILLS: 

  • Knowledge of and experience with multiple cost estimating methodologies and appropriate applicability  
  • Knowledge of the expected cost accuracy at each gate and the input requirements to achieve that level of performance  
  • Strong champion of transparency and detailed discipline  
  • Ability to assess and clearly articulate the level of uncertainty/risk within the prepared cost estimate  
  • Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate across different corporate functions and levels of management  
  • Foundational understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and internal controls  
  • Comfortable managing financial data and developing processes for reporting  
  • Strong supporting member of the core project team; seen as a trusted advisor  
  • Willingness to ask questions and develop a proficient understanding of Nestlé project controls and tools
