Veterinary Assistant- Contractor

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for performing and assisting the necessary support work related to the health care of the cats and dogs under supervision of veterinarian.

 

This position would be for 6 months and the schedule is Thursday- Monday. The pay is $23.50/hr

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Knowledge of and compliance with the Animal Welfare Act and all procedures and protocols in the Nestlé Purina R&D Petcare Manual, QMS and GLP

 

Perform pet care procedures as follows:

  • Perform daily rounds and report to the veterinarians sick or unusual behavior
  • Fill prescriptions and administer treatments
  • Observe animals during treatment; monitor & report progress to vets
  • Provide care of pets in clinic
  • Perform diagnostics as needed
  • Assist with colony wellness program
  • Initiate contact and assist relief vet when needed
  • Perform surgery supply set-up including sterilization of surgical instruments
  • Prep patient for surgical procedure
  • Monitor heart rate, respiration and temperature of patient during and after anesthetic procedure
  • Provide written and verbal communication to pet care staff

Maintain necessary records as follows:

  • Record animal medical/clinical data as outlined in protocol; enter health into database
  • Maintain animal records in orderly manner
  • File/input laboratory results
  • Maintain anesthetic and prophylactic care records
  • Maintain updated treatment list

Maintenance of veterinary suite and associated areas:

  • Maintain safe, sanitary & orderly work area
  • Clean & sanitize work area daily (vet suite) or as used (DEXA, radiology…) and hospitalization area
  • Clean-up of surgical suite & instruments post-op

Practice safety in the work area

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist veterinarians & other technicians with sample collections
  • Actively participate in training and skill development as needed
  • Additional duties as assigned

 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS (Minimum):

 

Education: High School Diploma (or GED)

 

Experience (Years/Type):  

  • Minimum 1 year experience working with animals in a clinical setting
  • Demonstrated skill with handling animals
  • Ability to work well independently and in a team
  • Good interpersonal, communication, organization, and math skills
  • Computer literacy

 

Specialized knowledge/skills preferred but not required:

  • Advanced training or experience in animal science, veterinary technology, or animal handling, grooming, or behavior
  • Prefer 3 years of experience working with animals in a clinical setting

 

Please note this contract position provides services to Nestlé in the USA on a temporary basis in connection with a specific assignment. Contractors in this position are hired and employed through Nestlé’s third-party staffing partner.
