R&D Engineer

JOB SUMMARY


Plan, organize and perform a broad range of research and/or development activity building a high level of specialized knowledge to create differentiating technology and processes while growing professional judgment with minimal supervision.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1) Collaborate with cross-functional teams to achieve multiple objectives, including, but not limited to:
a) Plan, organize and perform trials and experiments (bench-top, pilot plant, and factory scale) as required to complete process and product development projects.
b) Drive product and process conceptualization, development and scale-up.
c) Assist with hand-off from development to start-up.
2) Create and provide technical training as required to company personnel. Function as a project team leader as assigned. Required activities include, but are not limited to:
a) Provide effective project leadership and be mentored by technology champions as needed for development.
b) Fulfilling all requirements of the Product Development Process and Nestec regarding “absolute” deliverables for each phase.
c) Complete all required documentation and project reporting in a timely manner culminating in the Preliminary Manufacturing Dossier.
d) Adherence to Company policy on protection of patent rights and intellectual property.
e) Ensuring all appropriate documents and project records are filed appropriately.
3) Further develop R&D expertise and competence in the manufacture of pet food (dry, wet, treats) including the monitoring and evaluation of new technologies.
4) Research and propose R&D projects utilizing technical innovations/renovations applicable to Nestlé Purina’s business strategy.
5) Effectively communicate results through oral presentations and timely, written technical documentation and reports.
6) Adhere to Company policy on protection of patent rights and intellectual property.
7) Conduct all activity in compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and all required Company policies and procedures.
8) Travel up to 30% depending upon project and trial needs. Majority of travel will be domestic.
9) Practice safety in the work area.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Keep current in scientific/engineering discipline.
• Sustain development of project leadership skills.
• Cultivate and maintain good relationships with colleagues at other Nestlé operations and across industry.
• Support the Business as needed on the building or renovation of pet food facilities.
• Be an additional source of Technical Support for the process to the Markets.
• Additional duties as assigned.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS (Education, Experience, and Knowledge):
• B.S. in, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
• Minimum (3) years of professional experience in an engineering, R&D, or manufacturing environment.
• Experience in project management and process design.
• Good sense of business/technical interrelationships.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to engage and manage global stakeholders.
• Must be able to manage multiple assignments/priorities.
• Good organizational skills.
• Proactive/self-Starter.

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS PREFERRED BUT NOT REQUIRED:
• Manufacturing experience in a technical/leadership role (production, engineering, maintenance, quality assurance, etc.)
• Prior experience in the food or agricultural industry.
• Experience in using industrial statistical tools to drive process optimization, such as process capability analysis, design of experiments, and regression modeling.
• Competency in or willingness to develop proficiency in:
• Manufacturing automation data collection and extraction
• Programming languages for data analysis (Python, R, VBA, Java, etc.)
