Salary between £35,000 and £40,000 plus potential bonus + fantastic benefits inc pension/ 25 days holiday + additional 12 days flex days, flexible working.

Position Summary

We have a great opportunity for a talented individual with payroll experience to join our Payroll & Reward team in York as a Payroll Subject Matter Expert.  You will be leading and supporting Payroll activity across the Market in order to deliver high levels of service, compliance and accuracy, as well as collaborating with our outsourced Payroll provider in order to ensure the full end to end service provision is delivering to the highest standards.  You will also collaborate with stakeholders across the HR and Finance Functions, and build strong links with customers.

A day in the life of a Payroll Specialist

Working at a leadership level within our HR Operations team, you will need to demonstrate working with an end to end mindset, driving continuous improvement and be a role model within the team.

 

This is a busy and varied role, working to strict deadlines and with a need to prioritise and work at pace.  


 
Key Responsibilities will include:

  • Collaborating with our outsourced Payroll Provider, working in partnership as well as challenging when issues are encountered, to deliver end to end payroll activities as one team
  • Leading or supporting annual and monthly payroll activities to a high standard focusing on accuracy, compliance and timeliness
  • Support the business in the delivery of organisational change programmes by providing consultative support to the business on payroll requirements and options
  • Provide timely support for internal and external audits as well as ensuring any audit issues or findings are closed out
  • Act as Payroll representative to provide expertise within key business projects such as mergers and acquisitions or implementation of process/system changes
  • Collaborate with finance and internal tax to ensure end to end processes are completed seamlessly and compliantly
  • Work closely with the ITHR team to ensure that system upgrades and configuration changes are implemented successfully and compliantly
  • Provide compliant and business-focused recommendations and solutions to complex business challenges
  • Use feedback and insight to identify and implement continuous improvement activities
  • Share payroll insights in appropriate forums to drive positive actions
  • Understand our Reward offerings and processes and be able to support and cover within these activities as required
  • Operating at a leadership level, for example by leading continuous improvement project teams, providing coaching to other team members to build capability
  • Keep abreast of changes in legislation and HMRC guidance impacting upon Payroll, in order to proactively identify challenges and opportunities and recommend solutions
  • Have an external network with other payroll professionals in order to collaborate on benchmarking and best practice
  • Take opportunities to drive communication and capability build on payroll topics within the HR Function and wider business, in order to improve input quality
     

What will make you successful

  • An experienced payroll professional with at least 5 years payroll experience, ideally within a large and complex organisation
  • Ideally with CIPP or equivalent payroll qualification/s
  • Proficient in payroll and time management systems, ideally with SAP knowledge
  • Strong knowledge of HMRC regulations and requirements
  • Someone who is keen to continue to learn and develop as well as coach and develop others
  • The ability to communicate effectively and build strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders  
  • Highly organised and methodical with excellent attention to detail, ability to deal with complexity and ability to effectively prioritise
  • Ability to deliver effective and compelling presentations to stakeholders of all levels
  • Have strong customer service skills
  • Be able to deal with sensitive and highly confidential information
  • Have a continuous improvement mindset and an ability to both identify and implement improvements
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Ideally someone who has worked in a Manufacturing and Unionised environment, in order to understand the complexities of payroll in this context
